The Markthal, a new marketplace for gourmet food in downtown Rotterdam, features artwork depicting fruits, vegetables, and flowers on its elegantly curved walls and ceiling. The Netherlands is the second-largest exporter of food in the world, especially fruits and vegetables that are intensively cultivated on land reclaimed from the sea.
The building was designed by MVRDV, leaders of the new wave of “Superdutch” architects that emerged in the Netherlands in the 1990s, spawned from Rem Koolhaas’s Office of Metropolitan Architecture.
