Asmat loggers of Irian Jaya return from the forest on a narrow-gage railway. Their lowland forest is too swampy to support bulldozers and other mechanized equipment, and it is logged entirely by hand, with crews hauling logs approximately 60cm diameter to the railway with strips of rattan. Here they practice selective logging, only taking out the larger specimens of a few species and replanting with seedlings.
