These photos were taken as part of a story for GEO Magazine on the Maori Independence Movement that is attempting to regain rights given to the Maori in 1840 under the treaty of Waitangi which established British authority over the islands. Some of the Maori rights to land and fisheries were usurped under British colonial rule and the disagreements have continued under New Zealand’s constitutional authority.
