Anshan Iron and Steelworks, a steaming, smoking, fiery array of structures covering a nine-square-mile site, is said to be the largest such complex in China. Under pressure from the government, the giant parent company has committed to recycling more of the millions of tons of slag left by the steelmaking process. Air pollution here is so severe that even cloudless days produce almost shadowless light. Anshan, Liaoning Province, China.
