Looking toward the Manhattan skyline from Clifton, New Jersey, five miles away, it’s apparent that the Empire State Building is no longer the tallest in Midtown. A few weeks before this picture was taken, 432 Park Avenue topped out, and New Yorkers woke up to a new skyline. Harry B. Macklowe, the building’s developer, crowed at the topping-out ceremony, “It’s almost like the Mona Lisa. Except instead of it looking at you, you’re looking at it wherever you are. You can’t escape it.” A spokesman for the Empire State Building told the Times that they would not add the new tower to their interactive displays on the observation decks.
