Lunchtime on a holiday for a village of rice farmers belonging to the Yi ethnic minority. All the resident families gather for a communal dinner in the village square, on a day set aside for paying respect to their ancestors. Rice continues to be the foundational staple of the Chinese diet, especially in southern China. Here it’s even used for making noodles.
