Vir-Clar dairy farm near Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, is a rapidly expanding family-owned dairy with 1,450 (expanding to 2,000) cows. The dairy has been in the Boyke family since 1938 and kept a herd of 50 cows until 1995 when they decided to expand and modernize.
Here, cows are being impregnated with semen provided by Select Sires. Their cows produce approximately 28,000 lbs of milk/year, up from 23k lbs in 1993. They sell their milk to Grande Cheese.
Brian Kelroy, Select Sires regional sales manager, estimated that annual milk yield per cow has increased 30% in the last 20 years due to genetic and dietary improvements.
