Harvesting muscatel grapes on the volcanic slopes of Lanzarote Island, off the west coast of Africa. Farmers here make optimum use of scarce resources by hollowing pits out of the volcanic soil to protect the plants from desiccating winds and help them reach the inner soil with higher water content. The growing pits here are over 100 years old and have been managed by Familia Hernandez for five generations.
