The heart-shaped apple orchard at Herzapfelhof, another farm that practices biodynamic agriculture in Altes Land, is planted with 250 varieties to attract tourists. Studies show that agrotourism, which can range from farm stays to an afternoon picking fruit, as at Herzapfelhof, can help small farms survive, bring extra income to rural areas, and give city dwellers a taste of farm life. But make no mistake—the vast majority of Altes Land apples are picked by seasonal workers from Central Europe.
