Water buffalo are still used to haul wagons between the rows of palm trees to collect the oil-rich nuts.
Approximately 90% of platnation workers are Indonesian, and the men do all the cutting and harvesting, while the women fertizlize the trees, or spray defoliant and pesticides.
Wilmar is said to be the largest palm oil and vegetable oil trader in the world. The Sapi plant was started in 1989 and has 6,000 hectares of land. Palm oil is a very productive crop, with 6 tons of oil per hectare (soy is only 1 ton per hectare), but cultivation and harvest of the crop is very labor intensive.
