Fishermen on the outer reefs of the archipelago, where the last big fish in the area could be caught when these photographs were taken, dive under their boats to drive fish into the nets, and make sure there are no escapees. On this day, they returned with too small a catch to pay for fuel. A recent study estimates that between 1950 and 2016, the abundance of fish declined by 93 percent in Mozambique, with its many shore-based subsistence fishing communities.
