Free-range pig farms are a rarity in Europe, as most are raised indoors in confined animal feeding operations. This pig farm in Belgium raises pigs on contract for one of the few butcher shops (Slagerij Vande Walle) with its own slaughter operation. Duroc breed of piglets arrive here 2-3 months old, weighing 50-60 kg. 3 months later they are ready for slaughter weighing 130-150 kg. They have unlimited access to food (average 3kg/day) plus water and whatever they can find in their field. They are free to wander outside or stay in their “pigloo”. The government requires that they have 3,000 sq m for 6 pigs (18 pigs/hectare).
