Domaleh, a Korowai of the Sayah clan, forages for breadfruit in the remote rainforest of Papua, Indonesia, where the starchy member of the mulberry family has been a staple since antiquity. The large green fruits grow 40 to 60 sixty feet off the ground, but are no match for the Korowai, who often live in treehouses even higher to protect themselves and their culture from the outside world that only learned of their existence in the 1970s. The Korowai are master hunters and gatherers of the forest, subsisting on fish, lizards, slugs, and roots, as well as tree fruits. They are also believed to be the last known culture to practice cannibalism, although the practice is outlawed by the Indonesian government and is thought to be fading out.
