A seasonal cattle camp in the middle of an ephemeral lake near Kimise, Ethiopia. Semi-nomadic Oromo people spend the rainy season in the highlands but then migrate to this dry lake bed at 6,500 ft. in a valley of the Ethiopian Highlands, where it supports fresh grass for their herds.
Some 90% of Ethiopia's 110 million people are small-scale agriculturalists, with scarcely any cash crop for income or access to electricity and plumbing. But change is coming rapidly, with new hydro-electric dams and one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa.
Cattle in Ethiopia are almost entirely of the zebu type and are poor sources of milk and meat. However, these cattle do relatively well under the traditional production system and are constantly migrating in search of pasture. During the rainy seasons, water and grass are generally plentiful, but with the onset of the dry season, forage is generally insufficient to keep animals nourished and able to resist disease.
