Pariahan village is flooded and half-deserted in Obando Bulacan area some 25km north of Manila. The village was never connected to the mainland by road, only by boat. Fishing and aquaculture (milkfish, tilapia, shrimp, crabs, shellfish) are the most commonly harvested marine life. The parish church in nearby Binuangan was built in 1945, and the floor has been raised three times, one meter each 10-11 years since 1990 due to rising sea levels.
This photograph is part of a project that examines the global impact of rising sea levels, and the ways different countries and communities are engineering solutions to this growing problem.
