Some people fish for income or food, as humans have done since time immemorial, but many of the world’s fisherfolk just fish for fun—like the twelve thousand contestants who braved −15°F temps at the 2022 Brainerd Jaycees annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Minnesota’s Gull Lake. What began in 1991 as a small-town fundraiser has become the largest charitable ice-fishing contest on Earth, generating more than $1 million annually for area businesses and more than $150,000 each year for local charities, with a total of $3 million donated since the first contest. Tickets are between $35 and $50, with prizes for the top 150 fish. Cody Sablatura, of Corpus Christi, Texas, won the grand prize in 2022—a new GMC pickup—with a nearly 9.15-pound northern pike.
