Dallol sulfur hot spring and associated mineral formations. The sulfur first precipitates in white and grey, then turns to yellow, then orange as it gets more oxidized. When the sulfurous water drains away, the salty mineral formations slowly bleach to white from extreme heat and intense sunlight. The natural spring is some 150m below sea level in the middle of a salt flat. The geothermal heat of the East African Rift turns the minerals of the lake bed into a spectacular chemistry experiment in salt precipitation.
