Road workers making US$1.00 per day wait for the morning chill to disappear before they begin a day of carrying 20-liter cans of diesel fuel on their heads to fill earth-moving equipment. The vast interior of Irian Jaya is virtually roadless, and unsealed roads are quickly made impassable by torrential rains which erode the thin tropical soil.
