Tradition meets passive tech on an Amish farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where a worker gathers organic pasture-raised eggs from a mobile chicken coop equipped with a solar-powered automatic feeder. Each coop is home to around six hundred Rhode Island red-white leghorn crosses and is moved to new pasture each morning, while the birds get a supplement of ground organic corn—roughly a ton per coop every twelve days. The eggs are sold to Whole Foods stores throughout eastern Pennsylvania. Organic pasture-raised eggs require more land and supplemental feed than conventional caged eggs and, when this photograph was taken in 2021, sold for around four times the price of the cheapest conventional eggs in grocery stores. Both farming methods seem to thrive in Lancaster County, which has more laying hens than any other county in the United States.
