Artisanal fishing boats preparing to leave for a 7-10 day trip at sea. Joal has been the most productive fishing area in Senegal for the past few decades, but fishing has declined in recent years. I was told that for the past six weeks there have been almost no fish landed here as active fishing boats have had to go elsewhere. Most of the fish they were landing appeared to be small pelagic fish such as sardinelle and mackerel.
The small pelagic fishery has been migrating northward some 5° (300NM) every 10 years for the past few decades due to changing sea temperatures and increased fishing pressure.
