Harvesting Del Monte Gold pineapples, a variety developed 25 years ago that has become the dominant commercial variety worldwide, due to its sweet, less acidic flavor. These pineapples have a two-year lifespan, yielding their first fruit after 10 months, and a second slightly larger fruit 14 months later. Pineapples are typically propagated like succulents, by breaking off the spikey head and planting it in the ground. The fruit is picked by hand, then washed, waxed, and treated with some fungicide and insecticide before being chilled to 8°C for shipment by containerized boat to markets in North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
