These houses on Warren, Wyckoff, and Bergen streets in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn have been much altered over the years. Many were converted to boarding houses after the first wave of homeowners moved out more than a century ago, only to be turned back into residences after the 1970s. The row on Warren, built after World War I, lacks the stoops characteristic of earlier brownstones. The unconventional neighborhood of Boerum Hill nurtured writer Jonathan Lethem, who grew up in bohemian household on nearby Dean Street and has set several novels there.
