Lake Afrera, approx. 103 meters below sea level, and associated salt works. The briny water is pumped up onto the gently sloping plain to the north, where it is dried and harvested by hand for human consumption. The lake is said to be the hottest inhabited place on earth, and at sunset in mid-March, the air temperature in flight 300m. above ground was 98°F (37°C).
