Workers unload frozen skipjack and yellowfin tuna from the hold of the refrigerated cargo ship Sea Glory II in Bangkok, Thailand. The fish were caught by purse seiners in the Western and Central Pacific and sold to Thai Union, one of the largest tuna processors in the world that sells tuna in the United States under the Chicken of the Sea brand and in Europe as John West, Petit Navire, and Rügen Fisch. Unlike the giant bluefin tuna, skipjack tuna are the smallest and most abundant commercial species
of tuna. They mature early and breed year-round, making them the most sustainable commercial tuna fishery on the planet. They also provide much-needed revenue for Pacific Island nations that license the foreign tuna fleets in their territorial waters. Both skipjack and yellowfin fisheries in the Eastern Pacific are highly regulated by international fisheries treaties and management plans, and their stocks are considered healthy and not overfished.
