Small iceberg surrounded by sea ice in the middle of McMurdo Sound. The growth of sea ice around the Antarctic continent doubles the continent's surface area and reaches its maximum size in October, minimum in February. The extent of the sea ice plays a major role in the Antarctic Continent's weather, as it controls (and is a function of) the exchange of solar radiation, heat, and humidity between the sea and the atmosphere.
