Goats being herded for sale in the livestock market of Burao, Somaliland, where about half of the goats and sheep used for live export trade are purchased. Males sell in the local market for about $100 each during the peak of the Hajj export season, but prices drop about a third after that, as demand for live export is reduced. The prices are negotiated under a cloth using hand and finger gestures to keep the price secret. During the peak of the season, as many as 120,000 goats can be traded here in a single day. Live animal exports (mostly goats and sheep) are 85% of Somaliland’s foreign exchange earnings and 30% of its GDP, and indirectly employ 70% of the population.
