Inside the world’s largest community kitchen, Langar Hall of Amritsar’s Golden Temple, which gives out free vegetarian meals to four million visitors per month. Here, flatbread is being distributed in the two main dining rooms where up to 1,200 people can sit on the marble floor at a time. The soup is cooked in large wood-fired cauldrons in 4-ton batches with up to five batches on weekends and holy days. Visitors volunteer to cut vegetables, make roti, cook and serve food, and wash dishes afterward. The food cost averages about 10-12 U.S. cents per person. The meals are offered 24 hours per day and are shared with open seating that does not separate visitors by race, gender, class, or religion.
