More than three thousand tractors await shipment in the storage yard of Mahindra Tractors’ newest plant in Zaheerabad in the southern Indian state of Telangana. The company, which got its start in the 1940s making the iconic Willys jeep and International Harvester Farmall tractor for the Indian market, is now the largest tractor manufacturer in the world, building some 220,000 small to medium-size machines each year for smallholder farmers around the globe. Despite the growth of India’s high-tech and manufacturing sectors, large-scale agriculture is relatively scarce there. The world’s most populous country remains primarily a nation of small farmers, with about 60 percent of all households dependent on agriculture for their primary income. Mahindra has capitalized on that by making small tractors for the millions of smallholders in India.
