Boats cluster around the final killing chamber of the Almadraba, an ancient method of catching Atlantic bluefin tuna as they migrate through the Straits of Gibraltar. This fishing technique was developed by the Phoenicians, who deployed an elaborate labyrinth of bottom-anchored nets along the Spanish and Moroccan coasts to trap the fish as they migrate into the Mediterranean in their annual breeding cycle. These magnificent fish migrate near the shore to avoid killer whales that hunt them in the deeper waters. Atlantic bluefins are now making a comeback from severe overfishing, and the Almadraba is a way for scientists to monitor their population.
