Pingtung, Taiwan
Fish farms divide up the space between houses and narrow roadways near the South coast of Taiwan. The concrete-lined ponds are easy to clean and prevent the spread of disease to their high-value fish, primarily grouper and Indian salmon, that are exported to Hong Kong and China. The vast majority of Taiwan's land is too mountainous for agriculture, so the national diet has come to depend on marine life for protein.
