Machine harvesting on the olive fields of Sovena, the leading producer of olive oil in Portugal, with 6,000 ha of olive groves. Most of their fields are planted with a super-high density system, with Arbequina and Arbosana variety trees planted in narrow rows like hedges and pruned to be no more than 2.7m tall. They started developing their Alentejo plantation in 2008, after a large dam was finished nearby, and use reservoir water to augment natural rain. Irrigation and mechanical harvesting of their super high-density system increased yield to 11,000kg/ha compared to the traditional old grove Mediterranean system.
