Railway Police shepherd passengers onto the boarding platform at the main train station in Prayagraj. The prior day, at the peak of the Maha Kumbh Mela, there were 57 million pilgrims in the area, and dozens (some say hundreds) were killed in a stampede. To accommodate the surge in traffic, Indian railways provided 13,000 trains including 3,000 special service trains.
Hindu pilgrims come to dip in the water at the confluence of the Ganga (Ganges) and Yamuna Rivers for the Maha Kumbh Mela. This Hindu festival to attract an estimated 400 million people over six weeks when Jupiter, sun and moon are aligned with particular constellations.
