90,000 goats and blackhead sheep (and some camels) average a week in quarantine in Berbera before being exported live to Saudi Arabia, where 2.6 million animals are ritually sacrificed on the third day of the Hajj pilgrimage. According to Islamic law, most of the meat is used to feed the poor. Each animal is supposed to get a physical exam and ear tag before having blood tested for brucellosis, Rift Valley fever, and food and mouth disease. This quarantine is only active for 2-3 months per year for Hajj and Eid. This quarantine is mostly used for export to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
