Workers put the finishing touches on the roof of a newly constructed 17,000 sq. meter greenhouse near the town of Las Norias de Daza. A team of Romanian and African workers has spent 6 weeks building it, including anchors, pilings, and foundations. They are seen here installing a plastic gutter to channel rain and dew away from the plants on the inside of a roof made of thin plastic sheeting. I was told that the costs of this kind of construction are about 7.5 Euro per sq. meter, without the irrigation equipment.
The "Mar de Plastico" or sea of plastic, is a dense conglomeration of plastic-roofed greenhouses on the dry coastal plain of Southern Spain that covers some 30,000 hectares. During the winter months, much of Europe's vegetables are grown here and then transported north by truck.
