Jiangsu, China
A woman picking through a rice field that was harvested one day earlier, looking for grain that was left by a mechanical harvester. Apartment buildings and second homes for Shanghai's upper class are rapidly taking over the Yangtze Delta, which has some of China's richest farmland. Behind her are apartments that the government provided to displaced farmers. Each family receives two or three apartments as compensation, which they can occupy, rent, or sell.
