Rear deck of C/P Alaska Ocean bringing in a 65-ton load pacific whiting (or "hake") some 30 miles off the coast of Oregon. This is the third day of the season on a two-week fishing trip.
The ship has a 1,700 ft. long net that is towed 1 nautical mile behind and approximately 200 fathoms across the edge of the continental shelf. Last year the boat took in 6.5k tons of pacific whiting, and 63k tons of pollock, most of which is consumed as fillets or breaded fish sticks. One of their biggest customers is McDonald's, but their fish products are shipped internationally as well.
Measuring 114m long, the C/P Alaska Ocean is the largest fishing/processing boat in the U.S. and consumes 291 gallons of diesel/hour when cruising at 13kts, and 10k gallons of diesel per day when actively fishing, hauling in 200 tons of frozen/filleted product + 30 tons of fish meal/day.
