Stilt houses of over a thousand Bajau fisherfolk are increasing the size of Bungin Island, on West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Bajau tradition requires a couple to have a coral foundation in place for their home before they can marry, and so the tiny islet continues to expand by 10-15 houses per year. Their ancestors migrated here from Sulawesi some 200 years ago and stayed for Bungin’s easy access to good fishing. Today most of their catch is sold in the local market, but the larger fish are sent to Bali and exported to the Asian mainland.
When this photo was taken in 2022, there were 1,035 Bajau families crowded onto Bungin Island in Indonesia, but that number continues to grow.
