Camels graze on the sparse grasses of the Empty Quarter alongside the road leading to the Shaybah oilfield in Saudi Arabia. The camels had come across the border from the United Arab Emirates, which was allowed in exchange for Saudi rights to exploit an oilfield that extends underneath the international boundary. The multi-colored sand seen here is most unusual. Typically orange-colored sand is older than tan or white sand because it has had more time for its iron minerals to oxidize.
