Auction warehouse of La Union Alhondiga, where freshly harvested fruits and vegetables are brought in each morning for a midday sale, before being shipped north by truck. 30% of the production is for Spain, and 70% for Germany, France, Italy, and the UK. On this day some 800,000 kg. of fresh vegetables passed through this daily marketplace, one of many that move the produce grown under the "sea of plastic."
The "Mar de Plastico" or sea of plastic, is a dense conglomeration of plastic-roofed greenhouses on the dry coastal plain of Southern Spain that covers some 30,000 hectares. During the winter months, much of Europe's vegetables are grown here and then transported north by truck.
