Water dividing system of Bamhar village, some 40 km south of Adrar. The town is supplied with irrigation water by an ancient and well-maintained network of "foggara" or subterranean aqueducts. The young people are not interested in the hard work of maintaining the foggara, so the work rests with this group of old men. The foggara are about eight meters deep for most of their length (some reach back 3-4 km from the village), and the five foggara are enough for the village gardens. Here the foggara water emerges at ground level where it is carefully divided for diversion to family gardens.
