Central Hospital for the Maha Kumbh Mela is in a large industrial tent erected in Prayagraj near the confluence of the Ganga (Ganges) and Yamuna Rivers. On peak days, the chief medical superintendent says it has 45 doctors, 100 beds, 25 ambulances based here (38 visible in this image), and another 100 ambulances scattered around the tent city to serve a maximum of 57 million festival attendees on the peak day. The hospital has seen 50k patients so far, 100k total est. for entire festival
The most common medical problem they find is COPD (breathing and lung problems), due to the dust and smoke that pollutes the air.
The chief medical superintendent claimed that there were 0 fatalities during the festival up to Feb 31. The government says there were over 20 lives lost in the stampede on the peak night of the festival (Feb 29). Ambulance drivers I spoke to outside said they had recovered hundreds of dead bodies from the stampede.
Hindu pilgrims come to dip in the water at the confluence of the Ganga (Ganges) and Yamuna Rivers for the Maha Kumbh Mela. This Hindu festival attracts an estimated 400 million people over six weeks when Jupiter, sun and moon are aligned with particular constellations.
