Palm Jumeirah, an archipelago of artificial islands created by dredging sand from the Persian Gulf and depositing it on the coast of Dubai. Construction began in 2001. The trunk of the palm is for mixed commercial and residential use, and the outer crescent barrier is filled with luxury resorts (like Atlantis The Royal seen in the foreground), while the main fronds of the palm are luxury homes and villas from 4,000 to 35,000 sq ft.
