Orangutan in Gurung Leuser National Park
Habitat loss (primarily from the expansion of palm oil plantations into primary forest) and from capture for the pet trade has reduced the population of Sumatran orangutans to 14,000. Other kinds of megafauna have had their populations reduced even more: Sumatran tigers are now only 400, Sumatran rhino are only 100, and forest elephants are some 1400.
