200,000 Atlantic salmon swim in circles inside each of these eight pens in Hjorrund Fjord. The fish are fed from a barge via pneumatic tubes that spray pellets of fish meal, fish oil, and soybeans into the water. They have lights and video cameras at the bottom of each pen to make sure that all the sprayed pellets are being eaten. The fjord is approximately 70m deep underneath the pens, and goes to over 400m in the center, allowing the fish excrement to become widely distributed with the tidal action, while the mountainous shore protects the pens from wind and wave damage. After each 18-month generation of fish, the pens are cleaned and left empty for six months to reduce the risk of diseases and parasites.
