Young sadhus (priests) perform an ancient Hindu ritual (yajna) of chants and throwing hawan samagri (misture of rice chaff and herbs) on ceremonial fires to increase their spiritual awareness of sacrifice at Jyotirmath Badrikashran Himalaya. This Hindu temple complex was created for six weeks of use during the Maha Kumbh Mela, which takes place once every 12 years.
Hindu pilgrims come to dip in the water at the confluence of the Ganga (Ganges) and Yamuna Rivers for the Mata Kumbh Mela. This Hindu festival is expected to attract as many as 400 million people over six weeks when Jupiter, sun and moon are aligned with particular constellations.
