Cattle camp of Marguna Payam (village) on a clear morning early in the wet season. Most of the adult men are in the cattle camp some 12 km west of here, and the village is occupied by women, children, and the elderly. The people here are of the Pari tribe who once lived at the base of Lafon hill, but during the war the village was re-established some 9 km north, as the hill became a base for Northern Sudanese forces and was heavily mined. The main crop here is sorghum. The men were stationed in the cattle camp on shifts lasting one week to guard against cattle raids, and on this Saturday morning they were changing shifts. Food in the camps is primarily freshly boiled milk, with some sorghum added as is available when brought from the village some two hours walk (9km) distant.
