Fertile soil, a temperate climate, and a passion for intensive agriculture help make the 333-acre Dutch cabbage farm of John de Boer—as well as the rest of the Netherlands—some of the most productive farmland in the world. Its location doesn’t hurt either. The cool maritime North Sea climate of the province of Noord Holland, on the northwest coast, is perfect for growing de Boer’s specialty—blue cabbages—which de Boer exports throughout Europe and the Middle East. In 2021, the Netherlands exported $255 million worth of cabbages, which, along with its other vegetable and cut flower industries, helped make it the second-largest agricultural exporter by value in the world, after the United States.
