Lima, Peru
An archaeologist compares a corn cob believed to have been harvested over 4,500 years ago near Caral, Peru, the site of the oldest pre-Hispanic civilization in the Americas. On the left is an ear of corn from the local market, to illustrate how far humans have been able to increase the yield of an ear of corn, which is the most prolific food by mass in the world.
