Cultivating rice on the terraces near Selat, on Bali, Indonesia. An elaborate network of canals combined with rich volcanic soils and abundant rainfall on Mt. Agung allows for year-round planting and harvest of rice. Balinese farmers participate in the Subak system, which combines spiritual, natural, and social elements to control the flow of water through water temples and an elaborate network of canals.
