The row goes on forever in one of Agro Care’s six greenhouses in Middenmeer, Netherlands, which helps the company grow some 44 million pounds of hydroponic tomatoes every year. The Netherlands is the second-largest exporter of tomatoes in the world behind Mexico, and all of the Dutch warm-season fruit is grown in glass greenhouses. Agro Care specializes in tomatoes and has become one of the major suppliers in Europe. Planted in batts of mineral wool and fed with fertilized water, Agro Care’s tomato plants are more productive than the hydroponic ones grown in the medium-tech plastic greenhouses of Spain’s Mar de Plástico.
